New Adventure for Megan

At the beginning of summer, the Genesee Fire Department offered a Basic EMT class here in Genesee.  It was hard to pass that up.  I took the class along with my good friend Tiffany.  With all my healthcare experience and being out of it for so long, I was really excited!  The course was about 110 hours.  So far I have taken practicals and passed those.  Now to study for the written. :) In addition to taking this class, I have joined the Genesee Fire Department and am also doing the Firefighting.  Something I never in my life would have thought I would have done.  It has been so fun learning new things, going on calls, helping people in our community, meeting new people, and I have to be honest getting out of the house.  I love my children to death and am blessed to be able to stay at home with them, but it is also fun doing something good in your community and giving back.  I have been on many ambulance calls and three fire calls.  I have to say it is a great adrenaline rush!  I am breaking in my new Carolina boots today. :)

 Landing zone training!

The kids all enjoyed coming out to watch the helicopter land.  They even got to go up close and see the inside.  Not sure where Pierce is. :)

We are getting serious now. :) First time in full gear.

And just this week we got to go to the burning bins for the first time.  It was pouring rain and dark.  We practiced what you would do if you were going in a fire, saw what the bin looked like at the different heat levels, wore all the equipment, crawled in bins as if there were a fire checking for debris and doing the left/right hand crawl.  Wow!  We were dying.  Might have helped if we turned on our Oxygen.  LOL!  My back and neck were pretty sore the next day.

Good times!  Next time we do this, the bin might be on fire.  Eeeck!
